The History of Our Company
In 1919, company founder Richard Goes took over a watch wholesale business in Villingen and operated under the name “Richard Goes Uhren en gros und Export.” But just a few years later, Goes decided to leave the wholesale business behind and begin manufacturing his own measuring instruments. In 1926, he founded the “Barometerfabrik Richard Goes” in Esslingen—the origin of a brand that stands for quality worldwide. The brand name BARIGO was derived from the factory’s initials. As early as 1930, Goes registered the corresponding figurative mark for alarm clocks and instruments—early evidence of his entrepreneurial foresight.
After World War II, the company changed ownership. In 1949, Richard Goes KG was founded in Schwenningen. The company quickly developed into a leading manufacturer of weather measuring instruments. The 1950s and 1960s were marked by growth and international recognition. In 1972, the main building was expanded to include a spacious south wing—a visible sign of the company’s success. The product range included barometers, thermometers, and hygrometers, as well as altimeters, compasses, and marine chronometers. The measuring instruments were manufactured with a high degree of in-house production and assembled by experienced specialists—a commitment to quality that was valued worldwide.
Starting in the 1990s, BARIGO expanded its product line to include its first electronic products. The company remained true to traditional mechanics and continued to manufacture classic measuring instruments known for their accuracy, durability, and elegant design. Even after the turn of the millennium, BARIGO maintained its position as a brand in the premium segment. In recent years, however, the company faced significant economic challenges. This led to a turning point: In 2024, FISCHER acquired the rights to the traditional BARIGO brand and began manufacturing the high-quality instruments in its own workshops in the Ore Mountains. This marked the beginning of a new chapter—with the goal of preserving the brand’s values while simultaneously injecting new momentum.
